Types of Wing Nut

When assembling components with the use of bolt fasteners, it is important to have an accommodating nut component for the means of securing the bolt. Nuts are fasteners that feature a threaded hole, and they are paired with bolts to keep assemblies together through friction, bolt stretching, and compression. Depending on the assembly and its needs, there are a variety of nut types that may be used alongside a bolt. When there is a desire for easy component installation without the need for many tools, the wing nut fastener proves to be a useful choice.

Also referred to as a butterfly nut, the wing nut fastener is most recognizable by its two tabs which are angled outwards from the component’s sides. Such fasteners often exhibit a nut hexagonal shape, that of which is very common for such components. The tab or fastener wing of the nut is used for installation, and it provides the user a gripping surface so that they may tighten and loosen the nut with ease.

Similar to other nut types, the wing nut is intended to be used for securing assemblies through its installation on a bolt and through its fastener grip. Wing nuts are quite easy to install, simply requiring a user to twist them onto the end of a bolt. As the wing nut fastener contains internal threading, it can grip onto a correctly sized bolt with ease and travel up and down the shaft as it is tightened or loosened. With many other nut types, the installation and removal of the fastener often requires the use of a wrench or similar tool in order to efficiently grip and twist the component. As such, wing nuts are much easier to use, and their ergonomic design makes the process of installation simpler.

The ASME B18.6.9 classifies wing nuts into four groups, those of which are the A, B, C, and D types. Type A wing nuts are those that are cold forged or cold formed, and they may be manufactured in regular, light, and heavy dimensional series. Type B wing nuts can come in a few wing styles, and they are solid nuts that are hot forged. Type C nuts have three wing styles available, and they are die-cast. Lastly, Type D wing nuts can come in three different wing styles and are stamped sheet metal components. In addition to the various classifications of wing nuts, it is also important to consider the various materials that may be used to construct such fasteners. Generally speaking, the most common materials used for producing wing nuts include aluminum, copper, and iron alloys.

Due to the construction and design of wing nuts, such fasteners are most often reserved for low-torque applications or when the nut needs to frequently be installed and removed. As a result, a wing nut fastener may be found on assemblies where convenience is most beneficial, such as on a boat or a bicycle. Wing nuts can also serve as useful aviation parts, often being used for numerous assemblies where there are not high-torque requirements.

With the correct fastener components, assemblies can be established and secured with ease.
